Why Risk Documentation Matters in Banking
In the banking industry, documentation is more than paperwork—it’s a critical safeguard against operational, regulatory, and reputational risk. Poorly managed records can lead to compliance breaches, flawed decision-making, and even business failure. Recognizing the importance of strong documentation practices, EastWest Bank partnered with CORE to implement RISK: Reliable Documentation for Risk Management and Business Success, a capability-building program designed specifically for their Risk and Audit teams.
What the Program Covers
The program focuses on the role of accurate, consistent, and accessible documentation in supporting risk management, compliance efficiency, and long-term organizational stability. Participants explore how proper documentation strengthens oversight, enhances risk assessment, and aligns with regulatory expectations in banking.
Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, participants are able to:
✅ Understand the impact of documentation on minimizing regulatory and operational risks
✅ Apply best practices for maintaining accurate and consistent risk records
✅ Strengthen compliance and reporting processes through proper documentation
✅ Promote accountability within teams through clarity and traceability in records
Program Experience
Designed for up to 30 members of the Risk and Audit team, the program is delivered over 12 hours in an onsite format. Participants engage in:
- Interactive lectures
- Case studies
- Group discussions
- Workshops
- Hands-on exercises
This dynamic approach ensures that learning is not only understood but immediately applicable to real workplace scenarios.
Program Flow at a Glance
While structured across multiple sessions, the program moves participants through three key areas of development:
1. Understanding Industry Standards and Consequences
Participants examine expectations in the banking sector, the risks of poor documentation, and the importance of establishing credible reporting trails.
2. Building Strong Documentation Systems
Using a framework adapted from the HHS OIG’s General Compliance Program Guidance (2023), the group explores the seven elements of reliable documentation—from leadership oversight and policy-setting to auditing, communication, and corrective action.
3. Practicing Effective Documentation
The final days focus on applying writing fundamentals, overcoming documentation challenges, and leveraging technology for accurate record-keeping. A culminating workshop and action-planning session allows participants to refine real risk documentation samples and create improvement plans they can implement immediately.
Measuring Impact
To ensure learning translates into performance, the program includes:
- Pre-work assessment to determine baseline competencies
- Post-program Levels I-II evaluations to measure insights and action readiness
